COCHIN(KOCHI) is situated on the south-west coast of the Indian peninsula in the breathtakingly scenic and prosperous state of Kerala, hailed as 'God's Own Country'. Its strategic importance over the centuries is underlined by the sobriquet Queen of the Arabian Sea. Informally, Cochin is also referred to as the Gateway to Kerala and South India.From time immemorial, the Arabs, British, Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese have left indelible marks on the history and development of Cochin. Over the years, Cochin has emerged as the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala and is perhaps the second most important city on the west coast of India (after Mumbai/Bombay). Cochin is proud of its world class port and international airport that link it to many major cities worldwide. This lovely seaside city is flanked by the Western Ghats on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. Volvo Ocean Race will pull in at Cochin(KOCHI) in December 2008

Stopover agreement signed; yachts will stay on for 10 daysKochi, Jan. 18 Kochi is all set to become the only stopover port in India for the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09, the world’s premier offshore yacht race.Kochi is the only stopover in India and the other stopover ports include Cape Town, Singapore, Qingdao, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg, and Stockholm. The race, which starts in October this year from Spain, will conclude at St Petersburg in July 2009. It will cover a total of 39,325 nautical miles and touch 12 ports in the world.Dr Venu V., Secretary, Kerala Tourism, said that the investment for hosting the event is estimated at Rs 5 crore and the fund would be raised through sponsorship. Proximity to international shipping routes has already made Kochi a preferred destination for yachts and cruise ships travelling to South East Asia and Australia, and the race will further add a new dimension to Kochi’s maritime prospects, he said.A race village covering 2.5 acres of land will be set up near the BTP Berth and the race will enhance Kochi’s standing as the hub of leisure sailing and cruising. The conduct of the race would also give further boost to the proposed cruise terminal project envisaged by the port under its integrated development plan.

Queen Mary, said to be the largest and most expensive cruise vessel in the world in COCHIN.

Queen Mary 2, the largest cruise ship was in Cochin. She called at Cochin Port on 8th March 2007 at 11.00 Hrs. for an overnight stay. She sailed to Dubai the next day at 14.30 Hrs. Cochin is the only port of call in India during her first global tour in 80 days. This is her maiden visit to India. She started her journey from Fort Lauder dale near Florida in the US on January 11th 2007. The passengers of Queen Mary 2 were given a warm welcome with elephants, traditional art forms of Kerala and ‘chendamelam’. The ship was carrying 2620 passengers. Queen Mary 2 is a crowd-puller at every port she visited. Hundreds of people gathered at Fort Cochin beach to have a look of the floating wonder.

LAKSHADWEEP ISLANDS(COCHIN,KERALA,INDIA)

The tiniest Union Territory of India, Lakshadweep is an archipelago consisting of 12 atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks. It is a uni-district Union Territory with an area of 32 Sq.Kms and is comprised of ten inhabited islands, 17 uninhabited islands attached islets, four newly formed islets and 5 submerged reefs. The inhabited islands are Kavaratti, Agatti, Amini, Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlat, Bitra, Andrott, Kalpeni and Minicoy. Bitra is the smallest of all having only a population of 225 persons (Census 1991). The uninhabited island Bangaram has been enumerated during 1991 census operation and has a population of 61 persons. Cochin International Airport links Lakshadweep with the mainland. Onward flights from Cochin are available to most of the airports in India and to selected foreign destinations. Agatti is the only airport in Lakshadweep. Helicopter transfer is available from Agatti to Bangaram Island Resort during monsoon and to Kavaratti through out the year. The flight from Cochin to Agatti takes approximately one hour thirty minutes. Flights operate six days a week.Four passenger ships- MV Tippu Sultan, MV Bharat Seema, MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy operate between Cochin and Lakshadweep. The passage takes between 14 to 20 hours. The ships offer different classes of accommodation; A/C Deluxe Class with two berth cabins, A/C First Class with four berth cabins and Tourist Class with A/C seating. The ships have cafeteria and snack bars, entertainment lounge, video shows and upper-deck promenade etc in MV Tipu Sultan and MV Bharat Seema.. A doctor is available on call on board these ships. MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy also offers comfortable A/C accommodation.

Marari Beach

Right in the heart of the "spice coast" just an hour from Cochin and even less to Alleppey(also Known as Alpuzzha) is the most fabulous stretch of soft sandy beach fringed with palm, an idyllic retreat for those who want to "get away from it all". Marari originates from "mararikulam", one of the local fishing villages, where life still goes on much as it did a hundred years ago, with the men going out to sea each day to earn a living bringing in the daily catch. Marari offers endless miles of superb sand beaches backed by swaying palms, virgin territory where you can experience to local charm and traditional keralan hospitality at its best. The Marari Beach is built in the style of a traditional fishing village with thatched villas that have been designed to be in keeping with the local village style.
